Eight Days

I think anything is possible in eight days.
I created the entirety of the comic book STARCHILD #8 in just eight days – pencils, inks, lettering, and a painted cover, while sick at the beginning, and in a San Jose hotel room prepping for a convention at the end.
In just eight days, I created FIFTEEN of the illustrations for the book THE FIRST DRAGON – art which normally took one to three days EACH to complete, and unless someone looks really closely, no one can tell which ones they are.
Now, there's a challenge ahead, which I believe can be met and conquered in just eight days.
The Kickstarter for the first volume of ALL THE COLORS OF MAGIC overfunded with 674 backers pledging $15,395, or around 180% of the goal. This campaign for the three new volumes is currently being backed by 220 supporters (and THANK YOU so much for doing so!) who have pledged $15,149, or about 63% of the total we need to produce the books. And there are eight days left to meet that goal.
I believe it's possible. And I think we can make it happen. Not just because I believe that there is quality and value in the work that I am offering, but because there is something in those drawings that reaches deep inside all of us, and gives us a glimpse of something we all hope for: that belief we all cherish and hold close, that magic is real, and wonderful things are possible. That is what I've drawn into every line, and infused into every word of my books. That's what is in these pages: the thrill, the rush, the delight of seeing something wonderful on pages that you get to share and contribute to and collaborate on. This magic is only half-finished: you complete it with every page you color. That's when it's made real, when you and collaborate to make something beautiful that could not have been created without each of us.

We've passed the halfway mark, with about thirteen days left to run! I'm hoping by the end of the weekend we'll have rounded the number of backers up to 200, and we'll be on our way to funding the whole triple enchilada. I just wanted to send this update to say thank you to all of you who have already pledged. I'm very thankful and grateful for your support.

A Special New Bonus Pledge!

I've gotten several requests from fans and collectors asking if I would consider adding some kind of Art Pledge level to the new coloring book Kickstarter, currently in progress. The problem is, I don't sell any original art from the books I do (I do sell work that was commissioned for other projects), and I can't add any original, full-sized commission pieces to my work schedule. I DO quick drawings inside books at conventions and signings, but if I added a new bonus reward to the Kickstarter, I'd want it to be a bit more formal and finished than a quick sketch. So I came up with something that is the best of both:
As a special Bonus Pledge, I'm offering an ORIGINAL 8 1/2" x 11" drawing of The Blue Dragon (from the cover of the seventh Imaginarium Geographica book), hand-inked by me in sepia (brown) ink, over a printed blueline pencil illustration I just finished today. As seen here, it's a frameable-quality piece, but it will be easier on my schedule to produce than the larger commissioned pieces. But more importantly, it will be a very rare opportunity for my fans to get an original Dragon illustration by James A. Owen!

Announcing More Levels Of Digital Magic!

Since this project started, I've gotten messages from a lot of people who understood the reasons why we wanted to do the three books as a set, but who also wished they could support us at a lower entry price point than the $45 for the three books.
And I listen to my supporters.
Beginning RIGHT NOW, we have added SEVEN new pledge levels to the ALL THE COLORS OF MAGIC coloring book trio Kickstarter campaign: three levels where you can pledge for individual PDFs of each of the coloring books; and four adding the PDF option to existing pledge levels for the printed books.
With the first coloring book we did, we added digital downloads as a supporter exclusive extra that you could get, one image at a time, via BackerKit after the campaign was over. They were a great deal at about a buck apiece, but that still meant the cost for all of the images was more than double the cost of the printed book.
Doing that with THREE books was impractical, so for this campaign, we're offering them now, as complete books, for the SAME price as the printed ones. We wanted to keep the print runs consistent on the printed books, so we couldn't offer those individually – but we don't have the same constraint with digital copies, and that allows us to offer the options to you, our backers. And for those of you who can't pledge for all three now, we hope to continue to offer the option to purchase the other volumes in both print and as PDFs after this campaign ends.
Those of you who have already pledged in support of the set of printed books have an even better option: you can add all three PDFs to your pledge for the cost of ONE. Individually, the PDFs are $15 each. But if you are a backer choosing a level of support for the print books, you can add ALL THREE of them for only $15.
The quality of the printed coloring books will continue to be as high as we can make them, with the best possible reproduction and paper stock. But we also appreciate the desire of our supporters to have copies to practice on, and share more often, and we want to make your support of this project as easy and as rewarding as possible.
